KUWAIT CITY, March 25 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump's recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights will cause more tension in the peace process, the Kuwaiti deputy foreign minister said Monday.

Khaled Al-Jarallah made the remarks on the sidelines of a ceremony held by the Greek Embassy in Kuwait to mark the European country's national day.

"We expected and hoped there will be steps to defuse the tension in the region. Regrettably, this move will lead to further tension and deterioration in the already unsolved peace process," he said.

The Golan Heights is Syrian territory, and the U.S. step is in violation of international law, UN resolutions and UN Security Council laws, Al-Jarallah noted.

Regarding the upcoming Arab summit scheduled for the end of March in Tunisia, he said the summit will discuss several topics including the Palestinian issue, Syrian crisis, the situation in Libya and Yemen, as well as the U.S. recognition of the Golan Heights as Israeli territory.

Trump on Monday signed a proclamation recognizing Israel's sovereignty over Golan Heights.

Israel seized the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed it in the 1980s, but the international community has never recognized the move.
