NEW DELHI, April 2 (Xinhua) -- The third edition of India-Australia maritime exercise AUSINDEX began in the waters of India's southern city of Visakhapatnam on Tuesday.
The aim of the exercise was to "strengthen and enhance mutual cooperation and interoperability between the Indian Navy (IN) and the Royal Australian Navy (RAN)," thereby providing opportunities for interaction and exchange of professional views between the personnel of the two navies, said a statement by India's Defense Ministry.
The third edition of AUSINDEX would involve exercises of various dimensions with focus on anti-submarine warfare (ASW). The number of units being fielded by both navies in the bilateral exercise is the highest till date, said the statement.
The maiden edition of the exercise was held in September 2015 at Visakhapatnam, while Australia hosted the second edition of the exercise off Fremantle in June 2017.
