TRIPOLI, April 2 (Xinhua) -- The head of Libya's Higher Council of State on Tuesday welcomed the African Union's observation at the upcoming UN-sponsored Libyan national conference.
The remarks were made by Khalid al-Meshri during his meeting with Moussa Faki, chairman of the African Union Commission, in the capital Tripoli, according to a statement issued by the Council's information office.
The Council "calls for the African Union to play a positive role in reducing negative interventions in Libya," the statement said.
Al-Meshri also stressed the need to hold presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya, as well as a referendum on the constitution, the statement added.
For his part, Faki highlighted the need for a Libyan solution to its own crisis, expressing desire for a Libyan reconciliation conference among heads of state of the African Union.
UN Special Envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame last year proposed an action plan to end the Libyan political crisis that includes the national conference.
Recently, Salame said the conference will be held on April 14-16 in the southwestern Libyan city of Ghadames.
Libya has been suffering escalating violence and chaos since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi's government in 2011.
Despite signing a UN-sponsored political agreement in 2015, the North African country has been struggling to make a democratic transition.
