CAIRO, April 2 (Xinhua) -- An Egyptian court sentenced on Tuesday 74 defendants to imprisonment terms ranging from 5 to 15 years for anti-police violence.

The Ismailia Criminal Court sentenced nine defendants to 15 years, 43 to 10 years, 19 to seven years and five to three years in prison.

The defendants, who are all loyal to the banned Muslim Brotherhood group, were charged with setting fire to police vehicles and burning a cafe in Ismailia Governorate in 2013.

The court also acquitted 14 others of the charges.

Egypt has witnessed a wave of terrorist attacks since the military ousted Islamist former President Mohamed Morsi in 2013 in response to mass protests against his one-year rule.

Hundreds of security troops and civilians have been killed in the attacks that were mostly claimed by an Islamic State branch in Sinai Peninsula.
