KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Afghan security personnel had busted three terrorist groups in the country's southern province of Kandahar, authorities said Monday.

"Personnel of the National Directorate of Security (NDS) have busted three terrorist groups of Taliban outfit during recent operations within the past 14 days," provincial department of NDS, the country's primary intelligence agency, said in a statement.

"A total of 27 arrests were made during the raids in Zharay, Maywand, Khakriz, Shah Wali Kot and Miyanshin districts of Kandahar province," the statement said without providing details.

The arrestees are responsible for conducting suicide attacks and terror activities in the province. The three groups were involved in series of major attacks on the security forces in Kandahar, the statement added.

The statement added that the timely arrest of the men has foiled major terror attacks.

One car, three motorcycles, five AK-47 guns and three pistols were among the items seized from the arrested people, the statement noted.

Security situation has been improving in Kandahar, the former stronghold of Taliban, over the past months as security forces have conducted search and cordon operations across the province. But the militants attack government interests in the province from time to time.

The Taliban has not made comments on the report so far.
