BEIJING, April 12 (Xinhua) -- China's first World Boxing Association (WBA) champion Xu Can is set to defend his WBA featherweight world title against Shun Kubo from Japan in his hometown of Fuzhou, Jiangxi Province, Xu's team M23 announced here on Friday.
Xu turned professional in 2013 and compiled a record of 15-2 before becoming China's first WBA champion, defeating Jesus Rojas by unanimous decision after an action-packed 12 rounds on January 26.
According to the WBA, Xu has to stage his defense in the six months after he won the title. M23 disclosed that a couple of cities including New York had showed interest to hold the game, but they finally decided to hold it in Fuzhou.
"It's my honor to play my first title defense in my hometown. I will train hard and dedicate the victory to my fellow countrymen," Xu said.
"Shun Kubo is a tough opponent for me, but I will find rhythm in my daily training. I am confident of winning this match," Xu added.
