ATHENS, April 15 (Xinhua) -- The number of visitors to Greek museums and archaeological sites which stood at a total of 18.6 million people, as well as revenues, posted remarkable increases during 2018 compared to the previous year, according to a survey released on Monday by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT).
During the twelve-month period from January to December 2018, an increase of 9.8 percent was observed in the number of visitors to museums, and a 12.8 percent increase in the relevant receipts, in comparison with the corresponding period of 2017, according to an ELSTAT press release.
The most popular museums, according to the survey, remained the Acropolis museum and the National Archaeological museum in Athens, the Heraklion Archaeological museum on Crete island and Delphi Archaeological Museum in central Greece.
As regards archaeological sites, during the twelve-month period from January to December 2018, an increase of 13.8 percent was recorded in the number of visitors, while a 12.5 percent increase in the relevant receipts, in comparison with the corresponding period of 2017, ELSTAT announced.
The Acropolis hill of Athens, Epidaurus and Mycenae in Peloponnese peninsula, Knossos on Crete and Lindos on Rhodes island were among the most popular archaeological sites last year, the survey showed.
