BEIJING, April 16 (Xinhua) -- A play adapted from "The Golden Cangue," a novella by Chinese writer Eileen Chang, will be performed at the Beijing Century Theater on April 17 and 18.
The 1943 Chinese novella is among the most widely known works of the 20th-century Chinese literature and has been adapted into varying artistic versions.
The theatrical production, directed by celebrated Hong Kong director Ann Hui, has received widespread acclaim since its debut in 2009.
The play is performed in Cantonese with Mandarin subtitles. Set in Shanghai, the play depicts the decadence of a merchant family.
Theatrical artist Perry Chiu stars as the heroine who becomes eccentric and perverted in a stifling family to cause the breakup of her daughter's relationship.
