NEW DELHI, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Two Naxals were killed Thursday in a gunfight with policemen in central Indian state of Chattisgarh, police said.

The gunfight broke out inside forests of Duvalikarka in Kuakonda area of Dantewada district, about 450 km south of Raipur, the capital city of Chhattisgarh.

"Today a gunfight broke out between Naxals and police forces here inside Duvalikarka forests," a police official posted in Dantewada said. "Two Naxals were killed in the anti-Naxal operation and two assault rifles have been recovered from the spot."

Policemen involved in the firefight have not suffered any casualty in the stand-off, officials said.

According to police, the slain Naxals were involved in the recent attack that left a Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) lawmaker and four police personnel dead in the district. The lawmaker's vehicle was targeted with an improvised explosive device (IED) on April 9.

On Monday three Naxals and a paramilitary trooper belonging to Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were killed in a gunfight in adjacent Jharkhand state.

Currently Naxals are active in more than a third of India's 600-odd districts across central and eastern part. Enditem
