YANGON, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's regional military headquarters in Rakhine state has come under attack by ethnic insurgent group, the Arakan Army (AA), a release of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Defense Services said late Thursday.

The AA launched the attack on southern and southeastern parts of the regional military headquarters as well as security post-2 in Baungdote village near Mrauk U township on Wednesday night, Myanmar's traditional new year day.

The onslaught which carried out from inside the village forced the military to retaliate.

The AA, with small and heavy weapons, had attacked a police headquarters in Mrauk U on April 9, in which two police and one police family member were killed with seven other police members being missing.

In that clash, seven family members of the security forces including three children were also taken away by the insurgent group.

Meanwhile, 23 AA members, who fled to the nearby villages, were captured by the military column after the clash.

The AA ethnic insurgent group launched frequent armed attacks in Mrauk-U and Yathedaung townships during March and April.

The government forces vowed to continue security operation to ensure that rule of law prevails in the areas.

Meanwhile, a two-month dusk-to-dawn curfew has been imposed on five more townships in the state by local authorities since April 2 following a series of attacks on the government forces by insurgents which resulted in casualties and destruction of civilian houses.
