BAGHDAD, April 21 (Xinhua) -- An Iraqi court on Sunday sentenced four defendants to death over charges of joining Islamic State (IS) group and carrying out terrorist attacks in Iraq and Syria, the Iraqi judiciary said.
The Karkh Criminal Court issued the death verdicts after it "considered the cases of the four over joining Daesh (IS group) terrorist gangs and carrying out criminal operations targeting innocent citizens in order to destabilize security and stability inside Iraq and Syria," the media office of the Supreme Judicial Council said in a statement.
"The four terrorists were tried by the Iraqi court after being received from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) as they are wanted for the Iraqi judiciary," the statement said without giving details about their nationalities and the terrorist attacks that they carried out.
Since February, the SDF began extraditing hundreds of captured IS militants to Iraqi forces after the liberation of the last IS stronghold of al-Baghouz, which was the last IS-held area in the eastern Euphrates River region in Syria's eastern Deir al-Zour province.
