ABUJA, April 22 (Xinhua) -- Eleven people were killed in Nigeria's northern state of Gombe when a car crashed into an Easter procession on Sunday.
Shuaibu Muazu, chief medical director of Gombe Specialist Hospital, confirmed on Monday that 11 victims were brought in dead. The injured are treated at the same facility and two other hospitals within the state.
Witnesses said the victims were members of a Boys Brigade in a local church holding an annual Easter Sunday procession in the city.
A local security officer has been identified as the driver of the car that crashed into the procession.
The driver attempted to escape from the scene of the accident but was chased and mobbed by passers-by.
The Federal Road Safety Commission said it has launched an investigation into the crash.
