DAMASCUS, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Russian warplanes conducted 12 airstrikes on rebel positions in Syria's northwestern province of Idlib after midnight Tuesday, a war monitor reported.
The airstrikes targeted the vicinity of the Idlib central prison and the towns of Falioun, Korin, and Bakflon on the western outskirts of the Idlib, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The UK-based watchdog group said airstrikes led to heavy damages without reports of human casualties.
It claimed that the Russian airstrikes came after coordination with the Turkish side, which is coordinating with some rebel groups in Idlib.
Turkey and Russia brokered a deal in September to impose a demilitarized zone in Idlib and its surrounding areas. However, violations are still being reported on an almost daily basis.
The extremist groups such as the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) refused to withdraw from the zone.
On the contrary, the HTS expanded and controlled the entire Idlib area.
The Syrian government while supporting the Russian-Turkish deal, said repeatedly that Idlib would inevitably return under the government control and that the government's patience has limits.
