DAR ES SALAAM, April 23 (Xinhua) -- At least three people were killed and two others injured on Tuesday in a landslide that occurred in a quarry in Tanzania's northern city of Arusha, police said.
Jonathan Shana, the Arusha regional police commander, said the landslide occurred when the victims were digging sand in a quarry for a construction project.
He said the two injured diggers were rushed to a nearby government-owned regional hospital, where their conditions were described as unstable.
Shana told a news conference that the landslide occurred at 8 am at an area known as Moivaro, situated eight kilometers from Arusha city center.
He said rescue operations were ongoing at the scene of the accident as some more people might have been buried alive by the landslide.
Gabriel Daqarro, Arusha district commissioner, said the landslide was the second to occur in the area in recent years, adding that the first landslide in 2013 killed 13 people and scores of others were injured.
