NEW DELHI, April 26 (Xinhua) -- India's top court Friday directed the country's central banking institution - Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to disclose information about its annual inspection report of banks and the list of wilful defaulters under the Right to Information Act (RTI).
RTI is an Indian Act (law) under which the government departments are bound to divulge details to interested citizens.
The bench was hearing contempt petitions filed by RTI activists Subhash Chandra Agrawal and Girish Mittal against the RBI.
"The Supreme Court (SC) which did not go ahead with contempt proceedings against the RBI, made it clear that it was giving a last opportunity to it to comply with provisions of the transparency law," an official said.
Earlier this year the apex court issued a contempt notice to the RBI for not disclosing the annual inspection report of banks under RTI.
