MANAMA, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Bahrain's Shura Council, the main legislative body of the kingdom, on Sunday strongly condemned statements by Iraqi Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr as "unacceptable insult to Bahrain and its leadership," official Bahrain News Agency reported.
The council described al-Sadr's remarks as a "blatant interference in the country's internal affairs, an obvious violation of international law and conventions and an abuse of the nature of relations between Bahrain and Qatar."
Meanwhile, the Bahraini foreign ministry summoned Nihad Rajab Askar, Iraq's deputy charge d'affaires to Bahrain, to express Bahrain's objection to al-Sadr's statements.
A day earlier, Bahraini Foreign Minister Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa tweeted offensively against Sadr, who earlier issued a statement which called on the "rulers of Yemen, Bahrain and Syria to step down immediately and to let the United Nations hold fair elections."
