RIO DE JANEIRO, May 1 (Xinhua) -- Sao Paulo's Uruguayan forward Gonzalo Carneiro faces an extended ban after a B sample returned positive for drug use.

Brazilian sports doping authority ABCD said the 23-year-old will remain provisionally suspended from all football-related activities pending a final ruling by its disciplinary panel, which could take up to six months.

Carneiro tested positive for Benzoylecgonine - the main metabolite of cocaine - after Sao Paulo's 1-0 defeat by Palmeiras on March 16 in the Sao Paulo state championship.

The last Brazilian top flight player found guilty of cocaine use was Santos forward Diogo Vitor, who received a two-year ban last October.

Carneiro has scored just one top-flight goal since joining Sao Paulo last year on a three-year deal from Uruguay's Defensor Sporting.
