WARSAW, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Boxers from across Poland are gearing up for a brand new heavyweight tournament which kicks off Friday in the northern town of Koscierzyna.

The event, organized by local promoter Krystian Kazyszka, will begin with four-round quarterfinal fights and will see well-known boxers and aspiring athletes in the ring.

As well as a top prize of 26,000 U.S. dollars, the winner will be offered a professional contract.

Among the top boxers squaring off are the current domestic champion Mateusz Cielepala and Mateusz Figiel, a three-time silver medalist.

Also taking part is 27-year-old Roger Hryniuk, a Polish youth champion and a two-time bronze medalist who hopes to continue his golden run.

The event is expected to attract large crowds at the opening bouts on May 10 and has received extensive media coverage in Poland.

According to organizers, six-round semifinals will take place in the autumn, while the final is expected to stretch over eight rounds later this year.

Boxing is a popular sport in Poland, with the country having previously hosted the Women's European Amateur Boxing Championships and European Union Amateur Boxing Championships.
