WINDHOEK, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Namibia will host an honorary half marathon event in celebration of its Founding President's 90th birthday on Sunday.
The MTC Sam Nujoma Half Marathon will attract both local and international athletes as well as individuals to the 21km, 10km and 5km races, according to telecommunication firm MTC.
Elisabeth Massamba, a member of the organizing committee, said the marathon is a wonderful platform for sports development in the country and a great opportunity to expand the growth of the road-running sport.
Chairman of the Sam Nujoma Foundation, Nahas Angula, called on all Namibians to participate and run in honor of the Founding Father.
"The athletes will be showcasing their prowess and stamina, just as the father of the Namibian Nation and leader of the Namibian revolution did during the liberation struggle," said Angula.
Angula said "it is our patriotic duty to encourage young people to participate in sports. Let us come in big numbers to support them."
