WINDHOEK, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Namibians thronged Augasto Neto cycle, a historic site in Windhoek, named after former Angolan president, in a race like no other to celebrate the country's founding president, Sam Nujoma's 90th birthday in a half marathon on Sunday.
The marathon consists of 5km, 10km and 25km to accommodate everyone.
Nujoma joined Zimbabwean founding president, Robert Mugabe as well as Zamibia's founding father Kenneth Kaunda as the only surviving nonagenarians in the Southern African Development Community's political sphere.
The multiracial turn out in itself a resemblance of the life of one of Namibia's liberation struggles who has spared his life to creating an equal society for Namibians from different backgrounds.
The participants where pooled from diverse backgrounds including professional athletes and amateurs, but they least cared for winning positions and only contend to celebrate the life of Namibia's liberation icon.
Nujoma now spends most of his time at a farm or his home town near Oshakati at Etunda village.
Much to the gallery of the race was the show of unity and sportsmanship exhibited by most of the athletes in the marathon to honor Nujoma that competition seized to be the reason for the race but rather celebration of a life well lived to the best of many Namibians.
