BERLIN, May 27 (Xinhua) -- The German Green Party (Die Gruenen) was the biggest winner of the European elections in Germany, almost doubling its share of the votes to 20.5 percent, according to the final election results published by the European Parliament on Monday.
"That is the best result we have ever achieved in any supra-regional election," said Ska Keller, one of the two top candidates for the German Greens.
The result in the European elections "exceeded all our expectations" and was an "incredible leap of faith," said Robert Habeck, co-chair of the Greens.
Habeck promised that the party would now devote itself to the upcoming tasks "with full concentration".
"Of course, one can be happy for a moment. But everyone knows that we have to deliver," added Habeck.
The German Greens did particularly well with younger voters in Germany, gaining 34 percent of the votes from 18- to 24-year-olds at the European elections on Sunday.
Five years ago, the Greens only received 10.5 percent of the German votes during the European elections.
Similar levels of success were experienced by Green parties in some other European member states, particularly France and Ireland.
Altogether, European Green parties managed to increase their number of seats in the European Parliament to 69, up from 50 after the last elections in 2014.
