VILNIUS, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Lithuania's incumbent President Dalia Grybauskaite met with the country's newly elected leader Gitanas Nauseda on Monday and expressed her willingness to provide all necessary support for the president-elect.
"We have found broad understanding about the situation in the country, about things that should be done. I really hope that the new president will fulfill people's expectations. It is both trust and huge responsibility at the same time," Grybauskaite told reporters at a joint briefing with Nauseda after meeting.
The outgoing president added that she felt a "human duty" to assist the president-elect.
"We are open, benevolent and are always ready to be a pillar of support," Grybauskaite underlined.
Nauseda said that opinions about various relevant topics were exchanged during the meeting.
"The President explained how she saw the situation and the work that awaits in the nearest future. I can see the wish to make the transition process as smooth as possible, based on mutual understanding and respect," Nauseda said.
Grybauskaite will leave her office after two terms as country's president. The newly elected president will be inaugurated on July 12.
During Sunday's runoff ballot, Nauseda won a landslide victory against rival, Lithuania's former minister of finances Ingrida Simonyte, winning 66 percent of voters' support against Simonyte's 33 percent, according to the country's Central Electoral Commission.
