U.S. dollar edges up

NEW YORK, May 27 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. dollar climbed slightly against its major rivals in late trading on Monday.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, was up 0.19 percent at 97.7632 in late trading.

Market participants paid close attention to the results of the European Parliament elections held within the 28 member states of the European Union on May 23-26.

Investors were wondering how the vote would impact on the bloc's global stance, experts noted.

In late New York trading, the euro fell to 1.1190 U.S. dollars from 1.1209 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound decreased to 1.2679 dollars from 1.2713 U.S. dollars in the previous session. The Australian dollar decreased to 0.6915 dollar from 0.6930 dollar.

The U.S. dollar bought 109.53 Japanese yen, higher than 109.33 Japanese yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar rose to 1.0039 Swiss francs from 1.0014 Swiss francs, and it was up to 1.3444 Canadian dollars from 1.3440 Canadian dollars. Enditem
