HARARE, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Zimbabwe's National Peace and Reconciliation Commission (NPRC) will starting Friday be setting up provincial peace committees in the country's 10 provinces to promote national peace building and avert potential conflicts in the country.
Despite enjoying relative peace, Zimbabwe remains volatile and bears the scars of political violence that has occurred over the years, particularly during election periods.
"The purpose of Peace Committees is to, among other things, promote peace, tolerance building, strategic advice on potential conflicts and raise awareness about conflict indicators within provinces," NPRC said in a statement Tuesday.
The NPRC is one of the five independent commissions established under the Constitution for the purpose of supporting and entrenching a culture of human rights and democracy; protecting the sovereignty and interests of the people; promoting constitutionalism; transparency and accountability in public institutions; securing the observance of democratic values and principles by the State and all institutions and agencies of government as well as ensuring that injustices are remedied as provided for in the Constitution.
