MAPUTO, May 28 (Xinhua) -- The National Disasters Management Institute of Mozambique (INGC) announced in the city of Beira on Tuesday that it will deactivate all temporary shelters set up as accommodation centers for the victims of cyclone Idai in the central province of Sofala.
"With the support of the defense and security forces we are currently setting up plots that will lead to the close of the accommodation center and help people resume their normal lives," said Paulo Tomas, the provincial delegate of INGC.
The INGC official told the press that the government has also been ensuring the distribution of seeds and agriculture inputs to solve food problems, allowing victims to focus on production in their new neighborhood.
INGC had set up 114 temporary shelters but only five remain open in the city of Beira and Buzi district, accommodating nearly 3,000 families.
Cyclone Idai affected more than 230,000 families and killed at least 400 people in the worst-hit Sofala province alone.
From May 31 a donors' conference will be held in the provincial capital Beira, where the government will be trying to secure 3.2 billion US dollars for the reconstruction process, a figure calculated from the post-disaster assessment recently conducted by the government.
