TOKYO, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed sharply lower Friday as concerns over the future course of the global economy heightened after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to slap 5 percent tariff on all imports from Mexico to curb illegal immigration.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 341.34 points, or 1.63 percent, from Thursday to close the day at 20,601.19.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, dropped 19.7 points, or 1.29 percent, to finish at 1,512.28.

Mining, transportation equipment, and glass and ceramic product-oriented issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.
