HOUSTON, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Twelve firefighters were injured in an explosion at a fireworks storage facility the U.S. state of New Mexico Wednesday, local police said.
New Mexico State Police tweeted that a large explosion happened around 12:15 p.m. local time at Roswell Industrial Air Center in the city of Roswell, about 320 km southeast of the state capital Albuquerque.
The state police learned that the Roswell Fire Department was packaging fireworks for the upcoming 4th of July community display when the explosion occurred.
"There were 12 firefighters inside the building when the explosion occurred. Two Firefighters were air-lifted to a trauma center for life threatening injuries. Ten firefighters were treated on scene for minor injuries," said the statement.
The cause of fire was still under investigation, the statement read.
The FBI and the city's fire department and police department are assisting the state police for an investigation.
