BANGKOK, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Prayut Chan-o-cha, the new prime minister of Thailand, on Thursday thanked his supporters in parliament for voting him for prime minister on Wednesday.
Prayut thanked the legislators who voted him for prime minister at Wednesday's joint House of Representatives/Senate meeting, and assured he will do his best to serve the interests of the country, religions, monarchy and people, deputy government spokesman Verachon Sukhonthapatiphak said.
Prayut won 500 votes, compared to 244 votes earned by rival candidate Future Forward Party leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit.
The prime minister called on all lawmakers including those who did not vote for him to cooperate with one another and do the best of their legislative abilities in the course of national and public interests, Sukhonthapatiphak said.
