RAMALLAH, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Undersecretary of Palestinian Wakfs and Religious Affairs Ministry Husam Abu Al-Rob on Sunday urged the international community to put an end to the "incursions" by settler groups into Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

"Jerusalem will remain Islamic and the occupation will not deprive it of its identity no matter what it does," Abu Al-Rob said in a statement.

Palestinian sources said around 330 Jewish settlers broke into the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound on Sunday under the protection of Israeli police.

The settlers entered through the Dung Gate, which leads to the Western Wall Plaza inside the Old City of Jerusalem, according to the Palestinians.

Al-Aqsa Mosque is sacred to both Muslims and Jews the latter of whom refer to it as the Temple Mount. For Muslims, it is considered the third holiest site in Islam.

The Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state, while Israelis insist that unified Jerusalem should be their eternal capital.

Israel occupied East Jerusalem in the 1967 war, a move that has never been recognized by the international community.
