SEOUL, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The South Korean navy on Monday received an upgraded 1,200-ton submarine with the state-of-the-art combat system and the improved target-detection capability, the arms procurement agency said.
The ceremony was held on the country's southern island of Geoje, where the shipyard of a local shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering stands, to deliver the retrofitted Chang Bogo-I class, Type 209 attack submarine to the navy, according to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA).
The submarine was commissioned in 2000, but it was brought back in June 2017 to the shipbuilder for the upgrading of the combat management system and the target-detection capability, and the addition of the towed array sonar.
Daewoo Shipbuilding delivered another retrofitted Chang Bogo-I class submarine to the navy in February.
The DAPA said in a statement that through the upgrading, major items of equipment were replaced with homegrown ones, noting that it would make easy the follow-up logistics support.
