MEXICO CITY, June 12 (Xinhua) -- The Mexican government "will never" accept the U.S. armed forces on its territory and will seek advice to avoid friction with its neighbor, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said Wednesday.
"Of course, we will never accept the presence of any U.S. armed forces on our territory, never, besides it is against the Constitution," Ebrard said in response to a question on whether there is a secret agreement with the U.S. government on migration.
In the presence of Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the minister once again said that Mexico will reduce in a short time the flow of migrants who cross the country on their journey to the United States, as was agreed.
He also said they will meet with representatives of the UN Refugee Agency and other organizations on Tuesday to design a "migratory management" scheme and define the country's efforts to contain the ever-growing migration.
The Mexican and U.S. governments reached an agreement on Friday to reduce the number of migrants from Central America.
The agreement suspended the implementation of tariffs that U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to impose on all Mexican imports beginning on Monday.
Under the deal, Mexico promised to increase its efforts to reduce undocumented immigration, and strengthen the deployment of its recently created National Guard.
The flow of Central American migrants fleeing poverty and crime has increased since the end of 2018, with caravans of thousands crossing Mexico, mainly on foot, to reach the U.S. border.
