JAKARTA, June 17 (Xinhua) -- A total of 12 people were killed in a severe pile-up crash that occurred early Monday on a toll road linking Jakarta to eastern Java cities, a police officer overseeing the crash location said.
The crash involved a bus, a truck and van cars, West Java's Majelengka Traffic Police Chief Atik Suswanti said.
The deadly accident happened as a bus suddenly trespassed into the opposite lane and directly hit the speeding vehicles heading for Jakarta, she added.
"The bus was heading for Cirebon from Jakarta. The bus driver was allegedly sleepy or lost concentration while driving. It suddenly crossed to the opposite lane of the toll road, directly hitting two vans and a truck," she said in a statement.
The crash also injured several others in the involved vehicles, she added.
"We found two with serious injuries and 10 with minor injuries."
An investigation into the cause of the crash is being carried out by the police at present, she added.
