CHONGWE, Zambia, June 17 (Xinhua) -- The Zambian government on Monday described the partnership with Chinese technology giant Huawei under the Smart Zambia project as a step in the right direction.
Robster Mwanza, Chongwe District Commissioner, said the government was optimistic that the partnership would create jobs for many young people.
"Huawei is a reputable firm that has advanced technology and this partnership should be able to accord us access to technologies such as the 5G. I am particularly excited because our young population will greatly benefit through what will come out of the financing agreement which Zambia and China went into in 2015," he said in an interview.
He said the Smart Zambia project will go a long way in enhancing access and use of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) across all sectors.
He also emphasized that the government has enhanced its paperless environment through Huawei's solution which has provided the physical infrastructure currently in use by the Zambia government.
"I therefore commend the Zambia government for investing heavily in its ICT infrastructure as part of an ambitious plan to transform the country into a Smart Zambia," he said.
Last week, Minister of Information and Broadcasting Dora Siliya revealed that the Smart Zambia project with Huawei was on course and would create jobs and enhance ICT training.
