UNITED NATIONS, June 20 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese envoy on Thursday called for adherence to the two-state solution in addressing the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
"The two-state solution remains the only correct way out of the Palestinian-Israeli question," said Wu Haitao, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations.
The international community must work on the basis of the Arab Peace Initiative, the land-for-peace principle, and relevant Security Council resolutions to facilitate a comprehensive, fair and lasting solution to the question of Palestine with a view to establishing a State of Palestine with full sovereignty, on the basis of the 1967 borders, and with East Jerusalem as its capital, he told the Security Council.
Any new initiative must comply with the above-mentioned basic international norms, he said.
The final status of Jerusalem is a complex and sensitive issue, which is fundamental to the settlement of the Palestinian question and crucial to regional peace and tranquility. The issue must be handled properly, said Wu.
