RENNES, France, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Chile and Thailand failed to make the Round of 16 of the FIFA Women's World Cup, despite Chile's 2-0 win over Thailand here on Thursday.

Both sides suffered two consecutive defeats after the previous two group matches. Chile needed a three-goal win to leapfrog Nigeria as one of the four best third-placed sides to enter the last 16 while Thailand needed to win by 15 goals to progress.

Chile dominated the game from the beginning but couldn't find the net until 3 minutes after the break. As the ball was bounced into the net by striking off Thailand's goalkeeper Waraporn Boonsing. It was the Chileans first goal at this tournament.

La Roja doubled the lead in the 80th minute as Maria Urrutia headed in a Yessenia Lopez's assist and they were one more goal away from the knockout stage.

Chile should have made history as they were awarded a penalty confirmed by VAR, but Francisca Lara saw her 12-yead attempt smack the crossbar in the 86th minute.

In the dying minutes Chile's goalkeeper Christiane Endler rushed off her line for corner, which is eventually cleared.
