Ethiopia thwarts coup attempt in regional state: PM

ADDIS ABABA, June 23 (Xinhua) -- The Ethiopian government thwarted a coup attempt in a region outside the country's capital Addis Ababa with some dead and injured, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said in a televised address late Saturday.

A senior army official and others within the military led the coup in the Amhara region, Ahmed said.

Some people were killed and others wounded in the failed coup, the prime minister said without giving more detailed information.
