BUDAPEST, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Hungary's low-cost airline Wizz Air celebrated its 15th birthday here on Monday, according to a statement sent to Xinhua by the airline.

"Wizz Air opened its base in Budapest 15 years ago. The first flight departed to London Luton on 24 June 2004 from the Budapest Airport," the company said. "Since then, 31 million passengers have used Wizz Air's flights to and from Budapest."

Wizz Air said: "The airline now operates flights from 25 bases in 14 countries, the largest of which is Budapest: 14 modern Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft operate in the Hungarian capital, with which Wizz Air maintains more than 4,600 jobs."

Wizz Air now connects the Hungarian capital with 66 diverse destinations in 30 countries and regions across Europe and beyond.

The number of destinations available from Budapest has increased by three this year. London Gatwick and Oslo have started their flights in the spring timetable, and last week new flights took off towards Castellon, Spain.

The airline's 2019 capacity from Budapest will rise to over 6 million passengers -- an annual increase of 9 percent, according to the company.

Over the past year, Wizz Air has carried more than 5.3 million passengers on flights departing from and arriving to Hungary, which is higher than the annual traffic of any other airlines in Hungary.
