KUNMING, June 26 (Xinhua) -- Countries in the Lancang-Mekong region are looking to deepen cooperation in improving power connectivity to boost common development.

More than 130 delegates from China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand and Cambodia discussed opportunities for power connectivity and energy cooperation at a seminar held in Kunming, capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province, on Monday.

Li Ye, supervisory director of China's National Energy Administration, said power connectivity is one of the priority areas of the Lancang-Mekong regional cooperation, and power infrastructure has been developing rapidly in the region in recent years.

However, about 30 million people in the region still lack access to electricity due to underdeveloped infrastructure, Li said, adding that China is willing to cooperate with countries in the region to promote the development of the power industry.

Liang Zhou, deputy chief economist of China Southern Power Grid, said that the Lancang-Mekong region is rich in clean energy resources, and power grid connectivity in the region will help promote the effective use of clean energy.

Improving power connectivity in the Lancang-Mekong region will help ensure energy security in the region, and countries in the region should further promote energy cooperation in the future, said Aung Myo Win, an official with Myanmar's ministry of electricity and energy. Enditem
