CARACAS, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Venezuelan prosecutors have opened an investigation into this week's failed attempted coup, Prosecutor General Tarek William Saab said on Thursday.
"We report that the Public Prosecutor's Office has opened a criminal investigation into the civilians and retired military personnel who were involved in the attempted coup," Saab told reporters at a press conference in Caracas.
On Wednesday, Venezuela's Minister of Communication and Information Jorge Rodriguez announced that intelligence officials had uncovered new "violent plots" to overthrow President Nicolas Maduro, which were to be perpetrated between June 23 and 24.
The attempted coup "would have lead to scores or thousands of deaths, among civilians and military members."
Saab said the suspects were "charged with terrorism, conspiracy, attempted homicide, treason and criminal association."
There was also a attempted coup mounted by opposition leaders on April 30.
