SYDNEY, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Australia’s famous Manly Beach in Sydney was closed on Tuesday morning after a man suffered extensive wounds from a suspected shark attack.
The local man, believed to be in his mid-50s, was swimming with friends at Shelly Beach near Manly at around 6:00 a.m. (AEST) when he was injured by what he thought to be a shark.
He was then able to drag himself onto nearby rocks and raise the alarm.
“The Manly resident was treated at the scene by New South Wales (NSW) Ambulance paramedics for a puncture wound to his back and injuries to his leg and stomach before being taken to hospital,” NSW Police said in a statement.
While no shark was sighted, both Shelly Beach and the iconic Manly Beach remained closed while local lifeguards scoured the area with a drone.
NSW Department of Primary Industries were called in to investigate the matter with shark biologists attempting to determine the size and species of shark involved.
