BAGHDAD, July 3 (Xinhua) -- The Iraqi paramilitary Hashd Shaabi forces conducted Wednesday an operation in Iraq's northern province of Nineveh and killed four Islamic State (IS) militants, the Iraqi military said.
The Hashd Shaabi forces killed the four extremist militants inside a tunnel dug in Sheikh Ibrahim Mountain in west of the provincial capital city of Mosul, some 400 km north of Baghdad, the media office of the Joint Operations Command said in a statement.
The security situation in Iraq was dramatically improved after Iraqi security forces fully defeated the extremists IS militants across the country late in 2017.
IS remnants, however, have since melted in urban areas or resorted to deserts and rugged areas as safe havens, carrying out frequent guerilla attacks against security forces and civilians.
