JAKARTA, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian police have arrested leader and members of Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) militant network, affiliated with al-Qaida, and began investigating the network's palm oil and other businesses connected with their activities, police said on Thursday.

The police's anti-terror squad has arrested the leader of the network Para Wijayanto, 54, and six other suspects, police spokesman Brigadier General Dedi Prasetyo said.

The latest arrests were carried out on Wednesday in Magetan of East Java province against two out of the seven people with the initials of SA and AH, the spokesman said.

Wijayanto, who was detained last month, possessed palm oil plantations in Sumatra Island and Borneo Island, and used the outputs to help finance the Jemaah Islamiyah network, according to the police.

SA and AH are allegedly linked with the operation of the business, Prasetyo said.

Palm oil plantation has been growing in the vast archipelagic nation, making Indonesia the world's largest exporter and producer of the commodity.

Wijayanto was a student of Abu Bakar Bashir, the alleged mastermind of the Bali bombings in 2002, which left over 200 people killed, most of them foreign holiday-makers, according to experts.

Wijayanto was nabbed with his wife on June 29 on the outskirts of the capital Jakarta. He had been at large since 2003 and trained militants in the southern Philippines.

The Indonesian government has beefed up precautionary measures against terrorist attacks and passed a tougher anti-terror law, under which hundreds of militants have been apprehended since the beginning of this year.
