ABUJA, July 4 (Xinhua) -- The Nigerian army on Thursday said troops killed several Boko Haram fighters when the terror group launched a coordinated attack on an army base in the northeastern state of Borno.
The troops successfully repelled the attack on the 212 Tank Battalion at Gajigana in Nganzai local government area of Borno on Wednesday night, said Brig.- Gen. Bulama Biu, a general officer commanding the army in that part of the country.
Biu said the troops with the support of the Nigerian Air Force engaged the Boko Haram fighters in a fierce battle and repelled the attack.
The Boko Haram militants on gun trucks had attempted to infiltrate the troops' location, two days after the troops repelled a similar attack by the same group on troops' location at Goniri in the neighboring Yobe State.
Biu, who declined to give the exact number of terrorists killed, said the army recovered two gun trucks and high caliber ammunition from the attack.
One security source told Xinhua in a separate confirmation of the repelled attack that up to nine terrorists were killed by the troops.
