YANGON, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's ancient city Bagan will be preserved for generations over the next thousands of years under the protection and management of the international community, said state media the Global New Light of Myanmar in its editorial Monday.
The media released the statement along with celebration over Bagan's enlisting as a world heritage site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on late Saturday.
The editorial stressed the importance of Bagan's inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List, saying that it not only brings opportunities to maintain and help the site to thrive but also responsibilities which must be shared with international community.
"In fact, the conservation of cultural heritage does not mean conserving lifeless edifices and items, but things which are connected with the history and culture of our country," the editorial said.
The editorial called on all parties involved in the conservation work to have the responsibility to follow the rules prescribed by the UNESCO and continue their cooperation with the authorities to make the cultural heritage remain intact for another thousand years.
Bagan, located in Myanmar's Mandalay region, has more than 3,000 stupas, temples, monasteries and other religious structures built between the 11th and 13th centuries which have endured different kinds of challenges for more than 1,000 years. Enditem
