COLOMBO, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Over 700 drivers were arrested in Sri Lanka over the last three days after police launched a special country wide operation to nab drunk drivers since Saturday, police said in a statement here Monday.
A total of 796 drivers were arrested from across the country till Monday afternoon, in the special operations which will end in a month.
Police Spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara said the drunk drivers would be fined Rs.25,000 (about 140 U.S. dollars) after being produced in court.
Police officers who arrest the drunk drivers will also be rewarded, Gunasekara said.
Road accidents claimed over 3,000 lives in Sri Lanka last year.
