WINDHOEK, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Namibia seeks to develop a national elephant management plan to oversee the country's elephant population pegged at an estimated 24,000, according to the country's Ministry of Environment and Tourism.

A holistic vision and plan for the national elephant herd of Namibia is required the Ministry said Friday, in a tender advertisement seeking the services of a consultancy team to develop the plan.

According to the ministry, the plan should not focus on the management of the elephants per se, but on the role of elephants within Namibian and global society.

"The plan should focus on and the contribution that elephants make to the sustainable socio-economic development of Namibia and to the improved well being of the people," the ministry added.

Currently, in Namibia, about 80 percent of the total population of elephants occur in north-eastern Namibia in two key populations in the areas of Khaudum-Tsumkwe, and around the Kavango-Zambezi parks.

The remainder of the country's elephants population is located in the Etosha National Park, the Kunene and Erongo regions and private farms.
