HONG KONG, July 21 (Xinhua) -- The Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) on Sunday strongly condemned the behavior of some radical protesters who besieged the liaison office's building and defaced the national emblem.
A statement issued by the liaison office late Sunday night said that after a parade ended at its destination on Sunday, some radical protesters besieged the liaison office's building located in the western part of the Hong Kong Island.
The radicals devastated facilities, defaced the national emblem, painted words insulting the country and nation, which had went far beyond a peaceful demonstration, the statement said.
"Those behaviors have not only violated the Hong Kong Basic Law and local laws, but also seriously challenged the bottom line of the 'one country, two systems' principle and the authority of the central government," the statement said.
The liaison office expresses its strongest indignation and condemnation at those behaviors, and firmly supports the SAR government and Hong Kong police in severely punishing illegal, violent acts in accordance with law, so as to restore the social stability of Hong Kong, it said.
The statement stressed that institutions representing the central government in Hong Kong have performed their duties strictly in line with the Constitution, the Hong Kong Basic Law and authorization of the central government, which could not be challenged.
The liaison office called on all Hong Kong residents to have a clear understanding of the true nature of the violence by a handful of radicals, and resolutely safeguard the principle of "one country, two systems" and Hong Kong's rule of law.
