TRIPOLI, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Libya's eastern-based army on Monday said it carried out two attacks in the capital Tripoli against the forces of the UN-backed government.

The army's operation chamber said the army attacked the operation chamber of the government forces in southern Tripoli last night and killed a number of government troops.

Another attack was carried out by the army in central Tripoli on a military vehicle of the government forces, killing the vehicle driver and injuring others, it added.

The army, led by Khalifa Haftar, has been leading a military campaign since early April to take over Tripoli from the government.

The fighting so far has killed more than a thousand people, injured more than 5,700 others, and forced more than 120,000 people to flee their homes, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The army is allied with the eastern-based government, as the north African nation is politically divided between eastern and western governments.

Libya has been struggling to make a democratic transition amid insecurity and chaos ever since the fall of former leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011.
