TOKYO, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Japanese carmaker Nissan Motor Co Ltd plans to lay off 10,000 employees worldwide to help turn around its business, NHK public broadcaster reported on Wednesday.

The cuts, in the coming years, will mostly affect the company's plants outside Japan, while the carmaker is also considering to reduce production lines, according to the media.

Due to lower sales in Europe and the United States, Nissan's profits fell by 40 percent year-on-year, which caused the past fiscal year to have the lowest earnings in 11 years.

The company's former CEO Carlos Ghosn has been charged with financial misconduct and denies wrong doing last November. The automaker now has to rebuild the internal structure to make it more transparent and efficient, said the NHK.
