COLOMBO, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Wednesday congratulated Boris Johnson for being appointed as the new British prime minister and said Sri Lanka looked forward to strengthening ties under Johnson's leadership.
In a letter sent to the new British prime minister, Wickremesinghe said Britain and Sri Lanka enjoyed historical ties and cooperation in many spheres, and Britain has remained a strong economic partner for the island country.
"My government and the people of Sri Lanka remain committed to enhancing existing affinities and robust cooperation for our mutual benefit and prosperity," Wickremesinghe said.
Johnson was appointed as the new British prime minister after he was elected as the new Conservative leader by party members.
Johnson takes over from Theresa May.
